Sheet 01 — About the studio

One Studio on Stratford Road, Scarsdale.

We make pictures of houses that do not exist yet. Then we wait, and the houses catch up.

01 / 04 — How it began

A Drawing Is Quiet. We Give It Evening.

Walnut Lantern began with a small frustration. Plan sets are exact, and still they do not tell a client how a kitchen feels at six o’clock in October.

So we learned to build that hour. The angle of the sun on a lawn. The glow of a hall lamp through frosted glass. The grain of a walnut stair, worn a little at the edge.

We work from a single room on Stratford Road in Scarsdale. Few hands, few projects at once. Each file is read line by line before a single light is placed.

Architects and homebuilders send us the plans. We send back the evening. Two revision rounds sit inside every package, because the second look is where a picture becomes right.

02 / 04 — The order of things

Every Frame Passes Through Four Rooms.

  1. Clay

Pale volumes, no color. We judge the shape and the shadow first.

  2. Glass

Windows set, sky chosen, the sun placed where your survey says it falls.

  3. Grain

Walnut, stone, plaster, brick. Each read from your finish schedule.

  4. Lamp

The last light, lit inside. The frame is done when someone wants to walk in.

03 / 04 — The name

Walnut for the Grain. Lantern for the Light.

The two things we are asked for most, in nearly every brief: a warm material, and a window that glows.

04 / 04 — What we hold to

Four Habits We Keep at the Desk.

Written plainly, so you can hold us to them.

  • V-01

    We read the whole set.

Every sheet, every note in the margin. A stair width missed in the plans becomes a stair width wrong in the picture.

  • V-02

    Light is never invented.

The sun is set from your site, your orientation, your hour. A picture should be a promise the building can keep.

  • V-03

    Two rounds, spoken for.

Both revision rounds live inside the package price. A third is $190, named before any file is opened.

  • V-04

    The studio answers the phone.

Weekdays, 9am to 4:30pm, at (914) 725-2738. The voice you reach is one of the hands on your frames.
